Used phones offer real value if the buying process is rigorous. They also carry specific risks that new phone buyers don't face. Here's what to check before any money changes hands.
Physical condition: start here, but don't stop here. Look for cracks, deep scratches, loose buttons, damaged cameras, and bent frames. Minor cosmetic marks on a well-priced phone are normal. Structural damage can indicate a dropped phone with internal damage that isn't visible yet.
Screen health is critical. Test touch response across the entire display, including edges and corners. Look for dead zones, flickering, discoloration, burn-in, and brightness inconsistency. Screen repairs on modern phones are expensive.
Battery is the most likely hidden problem. On iPhones, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Anything below 80% indicates a battery that will need replacement soon. On Android phones, use apps like AccuBattery, or observe how quickly the charge drops during normal use.
Test every port and sensor. Plug in the charger and confirm it charges steadily. Check the SIM tray, fingerprint sensor, face unlock, proximity sensor, accelerometer, GPS, speakers, microphone, cameras, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile data.
Verify network and account status. Confirm the phone works on TNM and Airtel networks. For iPhones, verify that iCloud is fully signed out. For Android phones, confirm Google account protection is cleared and the phone can be set up fresh.
Ask directly about repairs. Ask specifically what was repaired, when, and where. A phone repaired with original parts by a certified technician is different from one repaired with low-quality third-party parts.
Check IMEI status. The IMEI number, found in Settings or by dialing *#06#, can be checked against databases to confirm the phone hasn't been reported stolen. It takes two minutes and filters out a category of risk entirely.
Buying through Techaven connects you with verified sellers who have already been reviewed for listing accuracy. That doesn't replace these checks, but it significantly raises the baseline you're starting from.
